Bulgaria has posted a strong growth in tourist visitors so far this year, the local press has reported.

According to the Sofia Echo, over 260,000 tourists and more than 5,000 vehicles visited the Rila Monastery in Bulgaria's Rila Mountains in the first half of 2007.

The second quarter in particular saw a 'substantial' surge in the number of visitors visiting that particular region of Bulgaria.

Tourism from Western Europe provided the biggest proportion of visitors from abroad, with German tourism numbers being particularly strong.

Between 350,000 and 400,000 German tourists were expected to visit Bulgaria for 2007, after visitor numbers increased during the summer.

And the Black Sea region was the preferred choice for these visitors, with the German tourism market growing 'steadily' in this area, according to tour operator TUI.

This was in contrast with British tourism in the area, which had showed a decline in spite of Bulgaria currently being a property hotspot for Brits.

The country of Bulgaria has a long history and boasts of impressive architectures such as the Alexander Nevsky cathedral in Sofia one of the biggest Orthodox cathedrals in Europe.

It is also a country that has become popular with tourists because of its large number of beach resorts.
