Almost half of Brits (42 per cent) hide all their Christmas presents in one place before they go under the tree, making it easier for potential burglars to snatch all the gifts at once.

Such is the warning from home insurance provider Direct Line, which notes that the main bedroom is the preferred spot for hiding festive treats.

Consumers may be more concerned when they learn that the average amount of money spent on presents by each person is £385 and as such the pile of gifts that could be stolen could be pricey to replace.

Andrew Lowe, head of home insurance at Direct Line, comments: "With all the extra possessions in the home, Christmas can be a popular time for burglaries so people need to make sure they are vigilant with their home security."

Lloyds TSB reports that 59 per cent of people think they will overspend during the festive season by an average of £174 each.

Those who wish to shop around for a cheap home insurance deal over the festive period - or any other time of year - may find that InsureandGo can provide them with a competitive quote.
