A fall in business travel arrangements is often one of the first casualties of a recession, it has been argued.

Individuals who are still planning a business trip, however, might want to take out comprehensive travel insurance prior to their departure to provide cover for their health and belongings while they are overseas.

Francis Tuke, a spokesperson for ABTA - The Travel Association, said that many people are now saying that business travel will fall for the remainder of the year, but the prospects for 2010 look more promising and could see figures rise again.

She commented: "Obviously business travel does actually tend to be one of the first casualties in something like a recession but it does tend to bounce back quite quickly."

According to the Premium Traffic Monitor published by the International Air Traffic Association, the number of premium travellers in April fell by 22 per cent in comparison to the same period last year.

Furthermore, by the end of the first quarter this year, the proportion of premium travellers had fallen to eight per cent of total passenger numbers across the globe.
