Almost all business travellers believe that business-class travel is becoming more stressful, a new survey has claimed.

American Express, which commissioned the research, says that 95 per cent of all such travellers feel that the situation is worse than it was a year ago.

Flight cancellations, long queues, inflexible booking systems and limited legroom are all among the factors agitating corporate travellers.

Over 40 per cent of all business travellers admitted to feeling stressed before they even reach the airport.

David Herrick, senior vice president of American Express Business Travel Europe, recently observed that "while the needs of business travellers can be extremely diverse and ever changing, something which comes out loud and clear is the importance of reliability, safety and security".

He added: "Time is often of the essence for today's business traveller, so they need to be sure their travel arrangements run smoothly and to time – a late arrival could mean a missed business opportunity."

Business travel, like that taken for recreational purposes, is an area of significant growth worldwide.

Forbes reports that US business travellers racked-up 240 billion miles in journeys last year.
