A UK heart surgeon has called for butter to be banned to help improve the cholesterol levels of millions of Brits - something that could impact on the life insurance costs of many.

Dr Shyam Kolvekar, a consultant at University College London Hospitals, said by replacing butter with a healthier alternative spread, the average daily saturated fat intake of Brits would be reduced by 8g.

June Davison, cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, commented: "Probably the best thing to do is encourage people to get used to reading food labels and getting used to knowing what is a high amount of saturated fat."

She added it is unlikely butter will ever be banned, as having a healthy diet is more about moderation than the wholesale banning of foods.

According to the British Heart Foundation, Brits could help their hearts stay healthy by cutting back on the total amount of fat they eat and replacing saturated fats with monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats.
