As the government rolls out its campaign to target road accidents among young people, MP's have called for a tougher approach to drink driving.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme Gwyneth Dunwoody, a member of the Transport Select Committee that is outlining new restrictions on young drivers, called for some of its recommendations to be extended to all drivers.

The committee is planning a proposal to impose a zero alcohol limit for young drivers and Ms Dunwoody argued that this should be extended.

'I haven't persuaded the members of that. I happen to think that would be a good response but you have to persuade people,' she told the Today programme.

Labour MP Louise Ellman, also of the committee, focused her statements on the 'Breakfast' programme on BBC One on the need to reduce deaths among young drivers:

'These proposals can save lives. Casualty rates on the roads are coming down, but in this category of young novice drivers they are actually going up,' she said, referring to the zero tolerance on drink driving and a further proposal to raise the legal driving age to 18.
