A series of car crashes has prompted campaigners to renew calls to increase the driving age limit to the European average, the Sunday Herald has reported.
The renewed campaign has led John Vine, head of road safety for the Association of Chief Police Officers, to set up a crisis summit with prominent figures involved in road safety in Scotland.
These will include transport minister Stewart Stevenson, police officers, academics, the AA and representatives in Road Safety Scotland.
The meeting will take place early in September and will discuss the demands made by some road safety groups to increase the legal driving age from 17 to 18, and to introduce graduate driving lessons.
"We are very concerned about the rising trend in road fatalities. Hopefully we can reach a consensus of all those involved in road safety about what can be done. There's a lot of ideas, but we shouldn't knee-jerk into this or that measure," Mr Vine told the Sunday Herald.
Among the car crashes referred to was last weekend's fatal accident involving three young men in their early 20s in Fife, Scotland.
In the past two years there have been five multiple-fatality crashes in the area.
