Camden council is set to start a two-month operation with the police to crack down on vehicle theft in the area.

The partnership, called VehicleSafe, will aim to reduce vehicle crime throughout the borough by targeting known hotspots and catching thieves in the act.

It will also aim to educate residents in the Camden area about the importance of vehicle safety and give some tips on how to keep their cars from being targeted.

These will include removing valuable easily seen items from inside the vehicle such as laptops, or keeping all windows, including sunroofs, shut.

The operation will start in September and run into October, and will include undercover operations and the use of a mobile CCTV van and decoy cars to catch potential thieves.

Local police authorities are also planning on making visits to past victims of vehicle crime in order to make sure they are not leaving themselves open to repeat attacks.

"This focused two-month operation hopes to hit home the message even more strongly that Camden is a no-go area for vehicle thieves," said Ben Rawlings, executive member for community safety for Camden council.
