Camping has been hailed as a great way to enjoy a holiday on a budget for both young people and families.
According to the British Resorts and Destinations Association (BRADA), buying camping equipment is a long-term investment which makes considering such a holiday worthwhile as a way to cut costs.
"It's very definitely a great budget option for younger free-and-easy people who [can] literally get on your bike with a light backpack. But its equally a great budget option from the more organised family side," said Peter Hampson, director of BRADA.
He added that because the only other costs are campsite fees and food, significant savings can be made by avoiding hotels and other expenses.
Research conducted by Barclays Bank in September last year noted that around seven per cent of Britons are active campers.
The firm also found that on average, campers spend around £382 on equipment, holidays, membership and campsite fees.
