Brits looking for a sustainable getaway might like to take out comprehensive holiday insurance and visit Canada, it has been claimed.

Brian Mullis, president of Sustainable Travel International, said holidaymakers have begun to make sustainability one of their key issues when organising where they plan to go away this year and Canadian tourism has responded to this in recent months.

He commented: "Canada is already well known for its beauty and remarkable diversity. Now it's becoming known for its commitment to sustainable tourism."

Mr Mullis added there are many sustainable excursions that can be undertaken in the country, but those looking to seriously reduce their carbon output should consider using public transport when they are abroad.

According to a recent travel survey by the Hotel Association of Canada, important trends with respect to the environment include increasing awareness of environmental issues among hotel guests and an increased importance related to both green-certified hotels and resorts promoting eco-friendly practices to their guests.
