The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has advised British car-owners to check their car insurance policies when travelling abroad.

A spokesperson has stated that while UK car insurance policies extend across the EU, people should still check the exact terms of cover.

Malcolm Tarling argues that the minimum legal level of cover may not adequately protect against certain eventualities such as theft or damage.

He also stated that additional cover may cost more depending on the country that is visited.

For those travelling in countries with high accident rates, premiums may be higher.

"You may pay more than if you were driving in France or Germany or Holland," he stated.

"Check your policy to see if you're automatically covered or if your policy automatically extends to cover you."

InsureandGo searches over 38 providers to find the most suitable car insurance policies for individual needs, with a number of coverage options available.
