After reviewing 180,000 car insurance claims made in the last year, the AA has identified some of the more unusual car accidents and mishaps occurring throughout the UK.

These involved a claim by a man whose car was ruined by a storm of apples unloaded by a forklift truck, as well as one from a lady whose vehicle was crushed by a stampeding bull.

Names of the claimants to make the list have been kept to the first initial of their last name to ensure anonymity.

Mr L may be pleased not to be named after a rather embarrassing snooze cost him his vehicle.

He was admiring the view from his van on holiday in Northumberland when he nodded off. When he awoke, he found he had parked on a causeway and the tide had come in.

While he was rescued by boat, his van wasn't so fortunate.

His claim is followed by a recent announcement by Gocompare.com that flooding could result in more car insurance claims in 2008.
