The average cost of car insurance in the UK rose 4.5 per cent in the second half of last year, according to Moneysupermarket.com.

Premiums stayed fairly constant throughout the first half of the year, the company asserted, but prices rose towards the end of the year, taking the average lowest car insurance premium to £303.

However, Richard Mason, insurance director at the firm, stated that the UK still has a very competitive car insurance industry.

"The market is not monopolised by a handful of providers any more and this can only be good news for motorists," he states.

He also advises that while men are often paying higher insurance premiums than women, this is often a result of the types of cars purchased, with males often opting for more powerful vehicles that are more expensive to insure.

According to a recent report by Confused.com, there are a number of simple things that may reduce car insurance costs, with location and job description having a part to play.

InsureandGo searches over 38 providers in the car insurance market to find the most suitable quote with a minimum of hassle.
