Holidaymakers are being reminded that card protection is not the same as travel insurance and that they should get both when going away, according to a report.

A spokesperson for APACS told World First said that the Consumer Credit Act can help people prevent financial loss for tourists buying faulty good while on holiday, it is not the same thing as travel insurance.

Mark Bowerman said: "Section 75 covers everyone, by right, through the 1974 Consumer Credit Act."

He also pointed out that people shopping abroad should ensure they purchase from reputable companies and use a credit card for any expensive goods as they are more protected than debit cards.

In related news, figures from Abbey published on the Motley Fool show that 88 per cent of people do not know the interest-free period that their credit card offers.

The interest-free period is a number of weeks where you do not have to pay interest on your credit card balance and is different to the "one off" zero per cent interest offers given by some companies, claims the website.

InsureandGo offers great value travel insurance.
