Brits could find that the economic downturn sees their employer urging them to take a break, it has been suggested.

Lauren Mackay, brand manager at Gap Year for Grown Ups, commented that employers are encouraging people to take a break from their career to reduce the workplace headcount.

Gap years to exotic destinations could see Brits take part in activities which need to be covered by an adventure insurance policy.

Ms Mackay pointed out that benefits of taking a "grown up gap year" could include increased confidence, the chance to learn new skills and showing the ability to cope in unfamiliar situations.

She said that the firm has seen a rise in the number of adults inquiring about taking a gap year.

"Our enquiries based on this time last year are considerably higher," she noted.

Adventure insurance from InsureandGo covers 40 activities as standard, including trekking up to 6,000 metres.
