The Caribbean is the most popular cruise destination and will continue to increase in popularity next year, according to new figures.

Some 80 per cent of the Cruise Lines International Association's (Clia) agents reported that the Caribbean was the most popular destination among their customers.

The Clia survey revealed 88 per cent of agencies saw a year-on-year increase in the number of Caribbean cruise sales, while 93 per cent said they expected higher levels for 2008.

Terry Dale, president and CEO of Clia, said: "Hands down, cruise vacationers will find the cruise industry's most innovative ships in the Caribbean.

"The Caribbean is a veritable candy store when it comes to the array of cruise lines and ships that are available to travellers."

The figures come as research released earlier this week from the UK's Passenger Shipping Association (PSA) revealed that 1.2 million Britons went on a cruise in 2006 – up 12 per cent on 2005.
