Holidaymakers have been urged to ensure they carry both cash and plastic when abroad.

Sarah Munro, head of Post Office Travel Services, said Brits could find themselves in trouble if they do not take the right methods of payment with them when they go on holiday.

"A surprising number of holidaymakers visiting more far flung destinations get caught out when they try to pay with cards in restaurants, bars and petrol stations, only to find that they are not accepted," she commented.

In addition, Ms Munro warned against taking all cash, as this poses a security risk and also makes people a bigger target for criminals if they are seen flashing large wads of cash.

Research by travelsupermarket.com recently showed Brits are looking to reduce the amount they spend when on holiday, with the first quarter average for spending per person per week down to £295, from £312 in the last quarter of 2009.
