Anyone looking to get off the beaten track in India might like to take out
holiday insurance and explore Chandigarh, it has been claimed.
Sarina Singh, senior author for Lonely Planet India, said the city - situated in northern India - offers a range of attractions to suit all budgets.
"Over recent years, Chandigarh has become an increasingly popular stopover destination for overland travellers, coming from or going to Pakistan, as well as for travellers road-tripping from Delhi," she commented.
According to figures from the Department of Tourism of Chandigarh Administration, the number of foreign tourists visiting the union territory rose to 37,967 last year, compared to 32,074 in 2008.
Furthermore, it noted over 60 per cent of foreign tourists are from Britain, the US and Canada, with tourist inflow to the city of Chandigarh - considered a gateway to Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and Punjab - continuously increasing for the past five years.
