A series of cheap flights to the Far East from local budget airlines are set to further open the region to tourism, a property investment company argued on Monday.
AirAsiaX, a new long haul budget airline operated by FlyAsianXpress, is set to launch its first operations in late October 2007 to Australia and China.
The airline had previously focused on the Malaysian market, but will now expand its operations to long haul flights thanks to its consulting partnership with the Virgin Group.
It is expected that it and competing airlines will soon help to offer cheap flights to Malaysia and Thailand.
According to Hetal Shah of Investors Provident, this could do for the Far East market 'what easyJet has done to the European sector'.
Malaysia could become a key hub of flights elsewhere due to its proximity to popular destinations in the area:
'For people going on holiday to the Far East generally, especially from the UK. When you look at package holidays you get a package of, say, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. So it comes as part of the package,' he added.
