Following research which suggests that the typical 30-year-old woman spends between £185 and £380 on a new handbag, Legal & General has advised consumers to assess the value of handbags and manbags, as well as their contents.
A study by the firm suggests that the value of a woman's bag and its contents can be worth £1,500.
Ruth Wilkins, Legal & General's head of communications at its general insurance business, comments: "It is extremely upsetting to have a handbag or the contents stolen.
"So rather than realise that you are not insured we suggest people check that they have cover now and that it is adequate to cover the cost of replacement."
The firm notes that many
home insurance policies offer cover for possessions away from a property as an optional extra, which could cover bags and their contents.
Earlier this year,
home insurance provider esure noted that the average school bag is worth £265.
