Consumers were advised to educate themselves of the extent to which their mobile phones are protected in recent days.
The British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) stated that while some people may obtain insurance when they purchase a phone, if they upgrade their handset they may find that they are no longer covered.
Peter Staddon, head of technical services at the association, noted that a policy may only apply to the original phone.
He added that mobiles can be included on
home insurance, but advised consumers to check the ins-and-outs of their policies to see if there are any exclusion clauses.
Mr Staddon concluded that people should "shop around" for insurance for their phones and not just get it "at the point of sale".
A survey carried out in conjunction with the Carphone Warehouse found that over half (51 per cent) of ten-year-olds have a mobile phone.
