A recent survey by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has shown that just one in eight schoolchildren in the UK is getting the recommended 60 minutes of exercise required to stay healthy each day.

Jo Butcher, assistant director of the wellbeing department at the National Children's Bureau, said this is a worrying statistic, as it could lead to serious health problems for millions of children in the years ahead if something is not done about it now, something which could impact on life insurance costs for thousands of households.

"Not only does regular physical activity promote good physical health but also it helps children and young people feel good, supports their development and enables them to learn about relationships," she commented.

According to the BHF research, children are now spending more time on their computers and mobile phones, with over half (55 per cent) admitting they spend 60 minutes or more a day texting and/or chatting to their friends and visiting social networking websites.
