China is set to make major investments in tourism, of close to £2 billion, local news agency Xinhua has reported.

Major investment will take place in the Three Gorges Dam region from this year until 2020, in order to boost the local economy and new employment opportunities.

It is hoped that the new funding will add 25 per cent to the area's gross domestic product within the next 13 years.

The money will be used to provide tourist ferry services along the valley, as well as building new roads and docks in order to better improve the area's infrastructure and tourism facilities.

The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world, more than five times the size of the Hoover Dam.

The dam spans the Yangtze river, in the portion between the cities of Wuhan and Chongquing.

The dam will become operational in 2009, and be part of the scenic Three Gorges area, so called because it is the meeting point of three rivers.
