Homeowners who love to decorate their property with Christmas lights and decorations need not worry about any effect on their home contents policy, according to Halifax Home Insurance.

David Rochester, head of underwriting for the provider, explains that while policyholders need not worry about lights affecting their premiums, they should still take safety precautions.

He notes that electrical sockets should not be overloaded when setting up festive lights as this can be a fire risk.

Additional hazards include leaving candles too close to flammable material such as curtains or other decorations.

"Don't leave Christmas lights switched on when you are out of the home, or at night when going to bed," Mr Rochester concludes.

Halifax Home Insurance is part of the HBOS group, which provides a range of financial services.
