The chances of losing valuables increases over the festive period as revellers enjoy one too many drinks, it has been claimed.

A YouGov poll commissioned by personal finance provider Churchill Home Insurance reveals that belongings to a value of £310 million are lost each year over Christmas.

However, drunkenness alone is not responsible for the high level of loss - which could have implications for consumers' home insurance policies.

The stresses and strains of Christmas shopping can also impact on people's ability to hold on to their possessions.

Data from the poll suggested that women were twice as likely as men to mislay objects over the Christmas period - although those items lost as a result of drunkenness were largely attributed to men.

Around14 per cent of males have lost belongings after one too many, compared to just four per cent of women.

Those considering renewing their home insurance might like to consider investigating cover for objects carried outside of the home - given that the average cost of replacing lost gifts, wallets, handbags and phones was estimated at £126.
