If a holiday has been specifically planned around a sporting event or activity that is then cancelled, consumers should look to claim a full refund from their travel agent, it has been suggested.

According to a spokesperson from the British Insurance Brokers' Association (BIBA), travel agents should be able to arrange an alternative trip or offer full compensation in such an event.

In most cases, insurance claims will not need to be made, noted Graeme Trudgill, technical and corporate affairs executive for BIBA, although additional cover can be provided.

Commenting on the benefits of ski insurancepolicies, Mr Trudgill said: "For piste closure you usually get around £300 a day ... that is why you have a specialist winter sports holiday policy, because you can get cover for piste closure."

Recent research by InsureandGo has found that 1.26 million skiers and snowboarders received no formal training on best practice on the slopes, highlighting the need for a comprehensive ski insurance policy.
