The number of accidents in the UK involving lorries registered elsewhere in the European Union is on the increase, according to
car insurance provider LV=.
Recent research from the firm indicated that the collisions involving such vehicles has risen by as much as 60 per cent in the past seven years.
Meanwhile, the number of foreign heavy goods vehicles operating in the UK has increased by 33 per cent in the same period.
The group warned that the same proportion of these lorries do not meet UK roadworthiness standards.
John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= general insurance, said "Not only is being involved in an accident with a lorry frightening but it can also be very costly and time consuming, as your insurer may have trouble tracing and communicating with the insurer."
Earlier this year, the company also reminded people of the need to put on their seatbelt before driving. Research showed that two million drivers still do not belt up despite it being a quarter of a century since it became compulsory.
