Development of coastal resorts around the country is attracting a growing number of visitors, according to Visit Britain.

The national tourism agency has commented that places like Brighton have become highly desirable destinations in recent years following periods of substantial regeneration.

"Brighton's a kind of fashion Mecca [appealing] to younger people, and you've also got coastal resorts around the UK capitalising on the food revolution - like Whitstable offering oysters," Sian Brenchley, spokesperson for the organisation.

Ms Brenchley added that because of commercial development, British seaside towns were becoming a viable alternative for Britons who would commonly holiday abroad.

She concluded by saying that with regeneration occurring across a range of areas, Britain was able to offer diverse holiday opportunities that would suit everybody.

A recent government initiative called Sea Change was launched earlier this month by culture secretary Andy Burnham, with Blackpool, Dover and Torbay the first destinations to benefit.
