Homeowners are being warned to beware as the UK is in for a spell of freezing cold weather in the week ahead.

Forecasters from the Met Office said that the recent spell in sunny weather will come to an end next week, with some areas even expected to receive snowfall as arctic winds blow across the country.

Most at risk of the freezing temperatures are areas in the north, as well as exposed western and eastern parts of the country.

The meteorologists also predict that some upland areas of Scotland could see as much as 30cm of snow, with five centimetres at low levels in exposed places.

Chief forecaster Nick Grahame said: "The snow showers will be heavy in places and the strong northerly winds will make for difficult conditions at times.

"Melting snow may re-freeze at night, with frost and ice being an additional hazard for some."

The freezing temperatures could cause damage to properties and gardens and homeowners are being urged to ensure they have adequate cover.

A spokeswoman for the Halifax commented: "A sudden unseasonal drop in temperature can wreak havoc on people's homes and gardens if they are unprepared for it.

"Water from a burst pipe in a loft space can very quickly cause damage to plaster ceilings, walls, kitchen units, electrical wiring and decoration, while frost damage to plants can also add up, resulting in claims for trees and shrubs."
