Consumers looking to stay safe online need to take a common sense approach to browsing habits, according to the Social Media Portal.

According to co-founder and editor of the global resource Tim Gibbon, vigilance is necessary for users visiting any website and responsibility needs to be assumed by individuals.

He suggested that corporations and governments cannot be relied upon to take sole responsibility for online safety.

Commenting on the possibility of an increased risk for users visiting social networking site, Mr Gibbon said: "There is always an increased risk when entering information online on any site, whether it is socially driven or not."

He added that it is possible that the number of fraudsters looking to target web users may well be more pronounced among social networking portals, with prudence advised in adopting a security technique that does not impede technology or browsing experiences.

Advisory service Get Safe Online suggests that people using social sites should only give out personal information if they are happy to do so and not let peer pressure influence decisions.
