Many business are failing to adequately protect the private data stored on laptop computers, according to a new report.

Information technology specialist Silicon claims that almost half of all company laptops come with neither locks nor encrypted hard drives.

As a result, Silicon insists, sensitive personal and corporate information is instantly accessible to anybody who steals such a computer.

Bruce Schneier, chief technology office of BT Counterpane, was blunt in the advice he gave, via Silicon, to companies which issue their staff with laptops.

"It's really simple. Encrypt, encrypt, encrypt. Encryption is the solution," he said.

The warning comes at a time when laptop thefts feature prominently in the news.

Earlier this month a portable computer, containing the personal and financial information regarding 10,000 staff, was stolen from the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust.

It seems that computer insurance, and not just security, is a necessary precaution against such crime.
