People buying travel insurance have been warned to check that they are covered for terrorist attacks.

Independent financial data and research company Defaqto said that many people do not consider the threat of terrorism when they go abroad.

It warned travellers to check that they are covered for such an attack.

Analysing single trip and annual multi trip travel insurance policies, it found that while most providers would probably pay medical claims as a result of terrorism, they may not for baggage and personal accident claims.

Mike Powell, consultant for general insurance at Defaqto, said that only 63 per cent of policies provide protection in the event of a terrorist attack.

Meanwhile, American Express has found that eight million British holidaymakers have suffered from theft in the past five years.

In a poll, it found 12 per cent of people would put all their cash in their bag or rucksack - a prime target for thieves.

However, eight per cent said they would put it in their underwear and another eight per cent in their bras.

InsureandGo offers great value travel insurance with no terrorist act exclusion.
