Consumer protection should be increased in the UK for travellers, even for those who do not take out comprehensive
travel insurance, it has been claimed.
Mike Greenacre, managing director of the Co-operative Travel, said that decisive action is needed by the government to ensure that travellers are treated fairly and offered refunds when their arrangements are altered or cancelled.
"We would like to see consumer protection expanded, not just to include schedule as well as charter flights but all forms of holiday and travel arrangements, which would ensure that UK holidaymakers are not stranded abroad," he commented.
Mr Greenacre added that until this happens, however, individuals need to book with brands and companies that can clearly demonstrate they have the necessary protection in place.
According to figures recently published by
InsureandGo, the value of holiday calamities suffered by Britons abroad during 2008 who did not have insurance totalled nearly £90 million, a 38 per cent increase on the previous 12-months.
Travel insurance from InsureandGo provides peace of mind for travellers that their health and belongings are covered when overseas.
