Motorists were today warned that that cold weather can play havoc with vehicles.

Car insurance provider MORE TH>N states that road users are 50 per cent more likely to break down in January, February and March than during any other months of the year.

Managing director of the firm Mike Holliday-Williams explains that the combination of poor weather leaving a car unused for a number of days can cause problems.

"Drivers should be aware of the weather conditions when planning a journey, reduce speeds and drive with extra caution. In especially poor conditions, don't drive unless absolutely necessary," he adds.

Advice to drivers given by the firm includes carrying de-icer in vehicles, checking that anti-freeze levels are sufficient and taking a mobile phone with breakdown contact details on all journeys.

In related news the Royal Bank of Scotland recently stated that January 2nd is traditionally the busiest day of the year for car breakdowns.
