Consumers looking for insurance should base their decision on the quality of the policy, rather than simply go for the cheapest, according to a new report.
Defaqto's report
Travel Insurance in the UK: Cheaper is rarely better found that some insurance policies are now "too cheap", which often means they are not actually able to offer adequate cover.
The company urged the government and the insurance industry to do more to educate consumers in the risks of going abroad without adequate travel cover.
According to its study, around ten million overseas visits are made without any insurance at all every year.
Reasons for not taking out insurance include unwillingness, ignorance and the holidaymakers being seen as 'uninsurable' because of their medical history.
"Consumers are being let down by the insurance industry which has made travel insurance policies jargon heavy to the point that the only thing they can easily compare is price," said Brian Brown, head of insight at Defaqto.
"This compounded with increased competition means that too many people are now travelling abroad with inadequate cover. With the continued growth of overseas travel to increasingly exotic places, more people are likely to end up on the wrong side of an insurance claim."
