When booking for holidays, cost and going to a nearby local airport are the two most important factors for holidaymakers, new research has revealed.

A survey of customers that booked through the website holidays-direct placed cost as the most important factor for holidaymakers when choosing a flight, with 44 per cent of respondents listing it at the top.

A local airport from which to travel to their destination was the top factor for 37 per cent of the customers polled.

The option to conduct check-in via the internet had no backers, despite having had a strong promotional push by airlines.

And the reputation of the airline hardly had any effect, being top choice for only 4 per cent of those surveyed, the same proportion that chose the option to choose a seat as a factor.

"People are now very used to being able to fly to their favourite holiday destinations from their nearest airport.

The days when holidaymakers from the north of England were willing to waste a day of their annual leave just to get to Heathrow Airport are long gone," said Paul Reeve of holidays-direct.
