A Romanian council is willing to make a financial sacrifice to the tune of a 60 million loan (£40 million) to buy back the castle that inspired Bram Stoker's Dracula, reports Bloomberg.
The gothic fort is currently owned by the aristocratic Habsburg family who now live abroad and the local authorities are willing to stake a mammoth bid in order to attract tourists to the region.
Aristotel Cancescu, president of the local municipality, told the news agency: "We want to get involved in getting back the castle and running it because it would be a very good opportunity to further develop tourism."
Dating back to the 14th century, the castle is surrounded by imposing mountainous countryside, ideal for mountain biking and trekking.
It was formerly owned by Romanian tyrant Vlad the Impaler in the 15th century, who used the building as a tax collection check-point, and became the inspiration for Irishman Bram Stoker's epistolary novel.
Locals fear that if the castle is bought privately, it could be turned into a vampire-style theme park.
