The European Commission has announced plans to crack down on 'holiday club' scams and tighten regulations on time-share holidays.

The UK's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) had been lobbying the Commission to update its EU timeshare directive in order to help put an end to the scams, which have heavily affected British holidaymakers.

Timeshares work by promising the buyer a holiday period in a given property, but holiday clubs have been able to get around existing regulations because they are not tied to a given property.

Instead, the promise of membership in a holiday club that offers discounts and cheap holidays is offered, but the deals then turn out to be worthless.

Existing EU rules on timeshares date from 1994 and will be updated to include discount holiday clubs, holidays on cruise boats, canal boats and caravans, according to an EU executive, quoted by Agence France Presse.

Other proposals include a ban on taking money upfront by holiday clubs, and requirements to better inform customers as to what exactly the contract covers and who it is with.
