A new security device, the Personal Car Communicator (PCC), has been given an innovation award at the British Insurance Car Security Awards (BICSA).

The PCC is a handy pocket-sized device created by Volvo that alerts a driver that someone is trying to break into their vehicle.

By detecting a carjacker's heartbeat, it can also alert a returning driver if someone is hiding inside their car.

Designed to be attached to a key ring, the PCC is yet further proof of the increasing importance car designers place on safety.

It has led to a substantial drop in car-related car theft, down to its lowest in 25 years, according to a survey by the Home Office.

In spite of the PCC Volvo wasn't even the biggest story at the BICSA, as rival manufacturers Citroen took home five awards for their innovations, a record for any company in one year.

"Many car thieves are just having to give up – thanks to the industry's continued quest to drive down car crime," said Peter Roberts, CEO for Thatcham.

Don't just rely on your car's technology, make sure you are properly covered with the right car insurance. Call or check online for great value deals from InsureandGo.
