As constrictive economic conditions continue to make themselves felt, many people are spending more time in their local community, a survey has suggested.

Conducted by Halifax, the recent poll has indicated that nearly two-thirds (60 per cent) of people regularly spend Saturday in their own home or at a neighbours' rather than heading out to a restaurant or pub.

In Scotland, the economic climate has caused 70 per cent of people to choose the home over other venues as their preferred weekend haunt.

Commenting on the findings, the home insurance provider reminded people that contents cover would help to protect them against the costs of cleaning up spillages while entertaining.

Paul Birkhead, spokesman for the group, said: "More home entertaining can mean more risks of spills and breakages, so it's important to make sure your home insurance includes cover for accidental damage around the home."

Earlier this month, the provider also urged those heading off to university in the coming months to make sure their possessions are covered.

InsureandGo offers a range of flexible home insurance options to suit individual requirements.
