The recent constraints on spending may have a more substantial effect on travel habits throughout 2009, the British Resorts and Destinations Association (BRDA) has announced.

Peter Hampson, director of the organisation explained that for many, the poor performance of the pound against the euro will not be realised until they travel abroad this year.

As such, the experience may lead more people to opt for a domestic break next year.

"It's only when they start getting down to holiday money and the surcharges that they realise what the expenses are," he commented.

He added that a growing environmental sentiment among Britons may also have led to the recent upsurge in the number of people choosing to holiday within the UK.

Mr Hampson's comments followed the publication of the UK Travel Survey, which showed that there were consecutive rises in the number of people of who were choosing to holiday within the UK.
