In the nine-month period ending September 2007, 1,972,493 tourists visited Cyprus, the country's tourism body has reported.

According to the Cyprus Mail, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) stated that the sector was up 6.4 per cent year-on-year in the September and that the total rise in the first nine months of 2007 signalled a 1.1 per cent rise over the same period last year.

Significant increases were noted in the Russian market, which was up by 43.9 per cent to 22,839 visitors and French tourism increased by 35.5 per cent.

An extra 9,000 tourists from the UK were also recorded in September in comparison to the same month in 2006, the publication asserts.

Cyrpus is home to Nicosia, which is the only remaining divided capital city in the world as one part is occupied by Cypriots and another by the Turkish.

Before setting off on holiday, it may be advisable for consumers to purchase travel insurance to ensure that they are fully protected should the unexpected occur.
