Homeowners will do an estimated £25 million worth of damage to their homes this coming weekend as they indulge in a spot of household maintenance, it has been suggested by one home insurance provider.

A new study from Allianz Insurance suggests that around 16 per cent of people have admitted doing damage to their homes in pursuance of DIY interests.

Of the 2,000 people included in the study, a 'worrying' 55 per cent of people admitted taking on home maintenance jobs with the incorrect tools, with 50 per cent of respondents stating that they had started DIY jobs without really knowing how to do it.

Simon Coughlin, spokesman for Allianz Insurance, said: "Before they start, we suggest DIY enthusiasts should check to see if their insurance policy covers them for accidental damage in case the job goes horribly wrong."

Meanwhile, a new study by Halifax has found that over a third of British men state that they do not like DIY and only take on household maintenance due to a sense of obligation, with a further 32 per cent feeling pressurised to undertake such jobs.

InsureandGo offers home insurance policies that protect the home and its contents.
