Close to 300 cars were seized in South Yorkshire and removed from the roads, as part of a police crackdown on unsafe vehicles called Operation Impact on Crime.
According to website refienpresse.de, cars that had been found not to have
car insurance or tax were seized by police and the Driving Vehicle Licensing Agency.
And of the 270 vehicles taken off the roads, more than half, 170, were later crushed after being found unroadworthy.
The cars crushed had problems such as bald tyres or bumpers hanging off, which made them unsafe to drive.
But police were not only sticking to vehicles that were obviously unsafe, a spokesman warned.
'Some are good quality cars but which have no tax or insurance. It shows that we do not care how old or how new a car is, if there's no tax or insurance it's going to get towed away,' said temporary assistant chief constable Paul Broadbent.
New camera technology introduced in a number of British counties have made it easier for police to check which cars are covered by insurance, it was reported last week.
