Tourists are being lured to the Scottish highlands by tales of John Lennon's childhood holidays in the most northerly region of the UK mainland.

The Beatles front man spent long summer holidays at Duress in Sutherland, the most westerly village on the north coast, when he was aged nine to 14 and returned to the highlands later in his life with Yoko Ono and his children.

Lennon, who was shot dead in 1980 aged just 40, was such a fan of the area that he wrote a song – In My Life – about the highland village.

Stanley Parkes, the songwriter's first cousin, spent time with him in Scotland when they were young.

"John never forgot those times at Durness. They were among his happiest memories. He loved the wilderness," he said.

"We went fishing and hunting and John loved going up into the hills to draw or write poetry. John really loved hill walking, shooting and fishing. He used to catch salmon. He would have been quite a laird!"

The Scottish highlands offer many activities and attractions such as watching wildlife, hiking across the mountains, relaxing on cruises and fishing.

But more energetic activities such as walking, trekking, windsurfing and cycling are also among the favoured pursuits of visitors to the region.
