At present, debit card users could find their
holiday insurance to be the only way to reclaim the cost of their tickets if their airline goes bust before their journey takes place.
However, action group Consumer Focus is calling for this to be changed in response to the recent ceasing of operations by airline SkyEurope.
The airline posted a notice on its website, telling travellers to contact their credit card or holiday insurance provider.
But those who paid with a debit card and did not take out
travel insurance could face losing their payment completely.
"We are calling for customers who pay with their debit card to be given the same rights as those who pay with a credit card," says deputy chief executive of Consumer Focus Philip Cullum.
He adds that, if customers hope to reclaim their funds as creditors of the company, they face a likely return of 3p for every pound they are owed.
