UK motorists have a large proportion of defective or worn tyres, new research by tyre safety organization TyreSafe has revealed.

According to its survey, close to a quarter of all cars and vans in the UK have at least one defective or worn tyre that should be replaced.

TyreSafety advises motorists to check these tyres as much as possible and to replace them if necessary, as skidding is a major contributor to car accidents, particularly in wet weather.

Recent heavy rains have made UK roads more dangerous than is usual at this time of the year, and improper tyres could increase the likelihood of accidents.

Heavy loads can contribute to the wear and tear on a vehicle's tyres, and owners of vans or other vehicles used to carrying so much should be extra careful.

TyreSafety recommended in particular checking tyre pressure in each tyre often and adjusting it when needed, cleaning dirt and dust from around the valves and checking for uneven tyre wear that could be indicative of a steering misalignment or out-of-balance wheels.

Tyres should have at least 1.6mm of tread across three quarters of the width of the tyre and should be changed when the tread falls below 3mm, the organization added.
