Those considering having dental work abroad need to do adequate research and ensure their dentist has "a good portfolio" according to an expert.
Tif Qureshi, a board member of the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (BACD) also said that treatments aboard are often done quicker than the UK as people are often away for a limited amount of time.
Mr Qureshi, who is also a cosmetic dentist, said that it was important to check the dentists' website to see how many procedures they've done instead of picking somewhere based on the price.
Market research by Mintel shows that spending on cosmetic dentistry in the UK was up to £627 million last year compared to £519 million in 2006.
Research from BACD shows that two thirds of people think that people with "warm and open" smiles are more approachable, with a third of people admitting they were concerned about the appearance of their own teeth.
In related news, Dentistry has reported that new EU legislation will make it easier for British patients to get private dentistry treatment abroad. EU health commissioner Androula Vassiliou said that Brits might soon be able to receive treatment in another EU country and claim the costs back from the NHS.
