Motorists looking to extend their insurance cover for travelling abroad need to discuss their travel plans with their insurer, it has been suggested.

According to one industry expert it is vital for drivers to discuss their cover with their insurance providers as factors such as where they will be travelling to can significantly change the level of cover available.

Adrian Webb, head of corporate communications at one online insurance provider, said: "If you're travelling somewhere outside the EU you have to let your insurer know … you need to have that conversation with them."

He added that there were some extreme cases where an insurer could refuse cover but added that discussing the matter was the first step to resolving this and warned against driving illegally without adequate insurance.

According to the British Insurance Brokers Association it is also important to have cars serviced before they are taken abroad and that drivers should always carry their driving licence and motor insurance certificate.
