Motorists who envisage running up a lot of miles on an annual basis should consider buying a diesel vehicle in order to make long-term savings.
Such is the claim of Which? following the publication of its latest fuel efficiency tests, which are claimed to be more stringent than EU examination standards.
The group pointed out that while diesel vehicles will cost more to buy, the more efficient engines will allow people to make continual savings at the pump.
It noted that all of the top ten performers in terms of fuel efficiency were diesel models.
And for those considering the purchase of a new vehicle, a Fiat Panda, Toyota Yaris or VW Polo might be a particularly smart buy, as versions of these models were all tied in first place in the tests, all managing 60.1 miles per gallon.
Richard Headland, editor of Which? Complete Guide to Greener Driving, commented: "It's a win-win situation. Choosing a greener car will reduce your carbon tyreprint, cost less in road tax and you'll save money every time you fill up your car."
Elsewhere, Saga has claimed that sports cars have fallen out of favour in the eyes of many of today's drivers, who were said to be averse to their poor green credentials.
